Daily Star - Lebanon committed to rights, freedom: Sleiman, December 2, 2011

BEIRUT: President Michel Sleiman, speaking in the run up to International Human Rights Day on Dec. 10, said Thursday that Lebanon has always been committed to freedom and human rights and has stood against violence and terrorism.

“Lebanon is not only unique in the region because of its democratic political system which goes back to decades, but because of its commitment to humanitarian, freedom and human rights values,” Sleiman said during a meeting at Baabda Palace with Kenneth Roth, the executive director of Human Rights Watch.
Meanwhile, the education minister issued a decree Thursday for all private and public schools in the country to actively participate in celebrating International Human Rights Day.
The decree called on the schools to dedicate at least one full academic day to introduce the students on the basics of human rights. “Schools should also work on organizing exhibitions about human rights violations and competitions between students on the understanding of human rights,” said the decree.
