Economy Minister Nicolas Nahhas said on Thursday that Prime Minister Najib Mikati transferred the funds to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) from the Prime Minister’s budget.
“Mikati wanted to protect Lebanon’s interests, took the decision [to fund the STL] and withdrew the funds from the PM’s budget,” Nahhas told Al-Manar TV.
Mikati announced on Wednesday that he transferred Lebanon’s annual share of funding to the UN-backed court probing the 2005 murder of ex-Premier Rafik Hariri.
However, Mikati did not specify the process through which the STL funds were transferred.

The Netherlands-based court has indicted four Hezbollah operatives in connection with the murder but they have not surrendered to the court.
Lebanon is responsible for meeting 49 percent of the STL's financing, which amounts to some $35 million (25.2 million euros) this year.
