The Prosecution and Defense
counsel of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) have been asked to file
written submissions to the Appeals Chamber on the crime of "criminal
association" (under Article 335 of the Lebanese Criminal Code), according
to statement posted on the STL’s website.
The statement said that
“the parties have until March 15 to submit their arguments to the Appeals
Chamber along with arguments on whether a hearing should take place.”
The statement added that
the Defense Office “has also been invited to comment on how this matter may
affect the rights of the accused.”
According to the statement
“the Prosecution asked in February for the addition of the count of ‘criminal
association’ to the indictment.”
“The Pre-Trial Judge is
reviewing the Prosecution’s filing and has requested the Appeals Chamber to
define the crime of ‘criminal association.’”
Four Hezbollah members have
been indicted by the UN-backed STL in the Rafik Hariri murder case. However,
the Shia group strongly denied the charges and refused to cooperate with the
court.
