The MP issued a statement Wednesday
in which he criticized two ministers, whom he did not identify, for their
remarks when the topic came up for discussion during Tuesday’s session.
During the meeting, the government
turned down a request to allocate LL100 million to provide assistance for
Syrian refugees – the proposal was put forward by the Social Affairs Ministry,
headed by Chehayeb’s colleague in the Progressive Socialist Party, Wael Abu
Faour.
Chehayeb said “the first [instance]
took place when [a minister] said the responsibility for [caring for] Syrian
refugees lies with the Syrian Embassy in Lebanon .”
“He deserves exceptional gratitude
for delegating this responsibility to an ambassador who carries out his duties
faithfully, kidnapping four brothers from the Jassem family, and crowns the
national responsibility of his embassy by kidnapping Shibli Aisamy.”
He was referring to two incidents of
disappearances of Syrian nationals approximately one year ago, in which the
Syrian Embassy in Lebanon
had a role, according to several officials and politicians – accusations denied
strenuouslyby Syrian officials.
The MP said the second stance arose
when a minister “set himself up as a judge, issuing verdicts about some Syrians
who are receiving medical treatment paid for by the Higher Relief Committee,
when he affirmed that they were criminals.”
“Congratulations to the Syrian regime, which
kills and displaces its people, on its exceptional allies, and congratulations
to the ambassador, on being tasked with the humanitarian mission, imposed by
international custom, on all countries receiving refugees,” he said. “And
congratulations to the Cabinet, for what these exceptional ministers have told
us.”http://www.dailystar.com.lb/News/Politics/2012/Apr-05/169294-mp-blasts-ministers-for-stances-on-refugees.ashx#axzz1r4JkVcPk
