Justice Minister Ashraf Rifi said that the existing situation at prisons is no longer acceptable, stressing that the judiciary shall cooperate with the security forces to alleviate the suffering of prisoners and reduce overcrowding in jails.
Minister Rifi inspected on Wednesday the Central Roumieh jail, having a closer look at the present situation there and the prisoners' current conditions.
Rifi toured the various jail's compartments and listened to the pressing needs and conditions of prisoners and detainees.
Rifi was accompanied by President of the Supreme Judicial Council, Judge Jean Fahd, Public Prosecutor Judge Samir Hammoud, and the Government Commissioner at the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr.
The Minister also pointed out that "the Syrian displacement increased the number of detainees and judicial files by 35 percent, stressing the dire need nowadays for improving prisoners' conditions.
