Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt said during his visit to Russia on Wednesday that Lebanon is committed to the UN-backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), which is probing former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri’s 2005 assassination.
“Lebanon is committed to the STL… but that does not mean [we] will allow any foreign interference in [our] domestic affairs,” Jumblatt said following his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
“There are parties, including Hezbollah, that consider the tribunal to be a foreign conspiracy. This should be taken into account,” Jumblatt added, according to the PSP’s official website.
Asked about the developments in Syria, the MP said that all parties “need to embrace the idea that the Arab people want freedom.”
“[Everyone] must understand that a revolution is taking place in Syria,” he added.
Jumblatt also called on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to carry out reforms and release the detainees arrested in recent events.
Activists say the Syrian government's crackdown on pro-democracy and anti-regime protests has left more than 1,400 civilians dead. Thousands more have been jailed.
Meanwhile, the STL indicted four members of Hezbollah in connection to Rafik Hariri’s murder, but the Shia group ruled out their arrest.
