Iloubnan - It's disgraceful that govt evades international commitments, says Marouni, October 4, 2011

MP Elie Marouni told "Al Sharq" radio station on Tuesday that the funding of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon is inevitable because no one can bear the cost of isolating Lebanon internationally.

"The amount of money which will be paid for the tribunal is quite small for the government and it's disgraceful that the cabinet is evading its international commitments as this would make it lose its credibility," the MP said.

Marouni argued that what is going on today regarding the tribunal is benefitting Prime Minister Najib Mikati among the Sunnis and maybe allow MP Michel Aoun to boost his public support.

"The objection on the protocol of the tribunal is in the hand of the UN Secretary General personally," he added.
The MP said that the visits paid by Zahle MPs to different political groups in the country are aimed at exploring the problems and hurdles facing Zahle and the Bekaa valley.

"It's imperative to listen to the views of the other side (March 8) and at the same time to echo our positions away from the media glare," Marounu explained.

The MP commented on the Syrian decision to stop imports from Lebanon.

He wondered why Syria would stop importing from Lebanon although this Lebanese cabinet was formed by Syria and Hezbollah.

"We want to ask Hezbollah's government why Syria is refraining from fulfilling the terms of the industrial and agricultural trade agreements which were signed with Lebanon. We wanted through our meetings with the other party to send a clear message about the government's position from the Syrian decision to stop imports from Lebanon."

He added that Syria has reversed its decision to stop importing industrial goods from Lebanon.

The MP hailed what he termed as Syrian revolution against the regime.

"What is taking place in Syria is a popular revolution and uprising against oppression and dictatorship. There is no chance to reverse this trend in Syria because the popular explosion has already occurred. People have the right to change the regime and we will not intervene in this decision."

Marouni indicated that the Phalange party will submit its own election law proposal.
