Kuwaiti Prime Minister
Sheikh Sabah Khaled al-Sabah announced on Sunday that Kuwait donated $1 million
for relief efforts to aid Syrians fleeing the violence in their country,
according to the Kuwaiti News Agency (KUNA).
“Kuwait announces the
donation of $1 million to fund the [United Nations] High Commissioner for
Refugees in its quest to provide help and support for the Syrian refugees,”
Sabah said in a statement following the “Friends of Syria” conference in
Istanbul.
The Kuwaiti Prime Minister
also said that the international community was focusing its attention on Syria
because the events there “have turned into a humanitarian crisis.”
The second
"Friends of Syria" conference in Istanbul on Sunday called on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to be given a
deadline to implement UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan’s peace plan, and
recognized the Syrian National Council as the "legitimate
representative" of all Syrians.
