The Daily Star - Dar al-Fatwa rents Akkar school to house Syrian refugees, April 1st 2012

BEIRUT: The Muslim Waqf [Endowment] Department in Akkar under the Higher Sunni Council said Saturday it has rented a school in the area to house thousands of Syrian refugees.
“Out of a sense of responsibility and humanitarian duty toward our displaced Syrian brothers and as a continuation of the distribution of material, financial, food and other aid, the Muslim Waqf Department rented a school in Akkar in the village of Berqayel in order to secure housing for our displaced brothers in Akkar,” a statement released by the Waqf said.
There are now around 12,000 Syrian refugees in Lebanon, according to the U.N. refugee agency in its latest weekly report.
While 7,088 refugees are registered in the north of Lebanon – with the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees and Lebanon’s Higher Relief Council – the report acknowledges that there are around 4,000 unregistered refugees in the Bekaa Valley, and “approximately 1,000 more receiving assistance from the UNHCR and partners in other parts of Lebanon,” including south of Beirut.
Earlier in March, the Waqf said that it has distributed humanitarian assistance to Syrian families, reaching around 1,000.
