The Daily Star - ICRC trains doctors in north to treat war wounds, July 20 2012

BEIRUT: Around 40 doctors in north Lebanon have received training from the International Committee of the Red Cross on how to treat war wounds. The workshop was held over two days, ending Thursday, and was held in partnership with the Order of Physicians and the Surgical Society in North Lebanon. “It is important that medical personnel treating weapon-wounded patients are equipped with the knowledge and skills to provide optimal care,” said Dr. Joseph Adase, an ICRC surgeon and expert in treating casualties of armed conflicts. Since the beginning of the unrest in Syria, the ICRC has supported the Lebanese Red Cross in helping transfer over 500 wounded refugees crossing into Lebanon and cover the costs of patients being treated in hospitals and facilities in the Bekaa and Tripoli. “Since January, the number of Syrian casualties entering Lebanon has increased significantly, reflecting the escalation in the violence. In response, we have stepped up our assistance, providing whatever support we felt was vitally needed,” said Jürg Montani, head of the ICRC delegation in Beirut. “It is an essential principle under International Humanitarian Law that wounded and sick have access to care without discrimination.”
