Daily Star - Court warns Bakri of in absentia trial if he fails to show up in court, November 16th 2011

BEIRUT: A Lebanese military court Monday warned Muslim preacher Omar Bakri that he would be tried in absentia if he fails to show up once more for his trial on terrorism-related charges.
Bakri, and his lawyer, Hezbollah MP Nawwar Sahili, both failed to show up for Monday’s trial at the military tribunal.
The president of the military court, Judge Nizar Khalil set March 5, 2012 as a new trial date and warned Bakri in a letter that if he fails to show up for this trial he would be prosecuted in absentia.
Bakri is a controversial preacher with joint Lebanese-Syrian nationality. He spent 20 years preaching in Britain following involvement with Syria’s Muslim Brotherhood and Hizb Ut-Tahrir in Lebanon.
Bakri, who insists that accusations made against him were politicized, was detained in November last year upon the request of a tribunal judge for undermining the state authority and inciting violence against the Lebanese Army.
He was sentenced to life in jail after being convicted of inciting murder and supporting contraband militant groups, but released on bail only 10 days later, after the court began a retrial.
