Prime Minister Najib Mikati said on Tuesday that his position regarding the Special Tribunal for Lebanon is “clear,” and voiced the importance of paying Lebanon’s share of funding to the international court probing the 2005 assassination of ex-Premier Rafik Hariri.
Following his meeting with Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros al-Rai at the Grand Serial, Mikati said that there are ongoing talks to resolve the issue, the National News Agency reported.
“Hezbollah confirms that it [does not want] the cabinet to [collapse], but it has not announced its support for [STL] funding,” the PM said.
He also said that the cabinet is still scheduled to convene on Wednesday at the Baabda Presidential Palace, adding that he will call for another session if tomorrow’s session is not held.
The NNA also reported that Mikati and the patriarch discussed latest regional and domestic developments.
The PM hosted a lunch in honor of Rai, the report also said, adding that Rai left without making a statement.
Mikati has called for the cabinet to meet on Wednesday to address the issue of providing Lebanon’s share of STL funding.
Lebanon contributes 49 percent of the UN backed court’s annual subsidy.
Four Hezbollah members have been indicted by the tribunal. However, the Shia group strongly denied the charges and refuses to cooperate with the court.
