iloubnan- In Vatican, Mikati confirms his will to resign if Cabinet refuses to fund STL, November 27, 2011

Lebanon's Premier Najib Mikati confirmed on Sunday to Vatican radio station that he would resign if cabinet fails to approve financing the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL). He also revealed he is scheduled to hold talks with Pope Benedict XVI on Monday.

Lebanon was under international obligation to pay 49 percent of its share to the STL, a UN court set to try Premier Rafik Hariri's suspected assassins. This issue has been divided Lebanon for months. A cabinet session to tackle this issue is scheduled to be held on Wednesday after Mikati's return from Rome. The Prime Minister said he would resign if the cabinet fails to approve the funding.

"Lebanon is part of the international community and cannot be selective in application of international resolutions," said the PM.

He added he would stress upon President Michel Sleiman's invitation for the Pope to visit Lebanon. "During my meeting with Pope Benedict XVI, I will confirm our keenness on common living despite all the dangers that are facing us," Mikati concluded.
