Lebanese Forces bloc MP Antoine Zahra on Wednesday said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime “does not benefit” from the possible collapse of the Lebanese government, which is dominated by supporters of Assad.
“The Syrian regime is suffering from a crisis and does not benefit from the collapse of the Lebanese cabinet,” the MP told the Voice of Lebanon (100.5) radio station.
He added, “This is why [pro-Assad cabinet members] are keeping it together and are attempting [to prevent the government from collapsing]” over the dispute of funding the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL).
“Funding the tribunal is the Lebanese government’s duty.”
Asked about Tuesday’s firing of rockets across the Blue Line from South Lebanon into Israel, Zahra said in a reference to Syria’s Assad that “those who benefit from this are the same ones who declared their will to blow up the region.”
Assad has warned that any Western intervention in his country rocked by anti-regime protests would cause an “earthquake” inflaming the region.
Meanwhile, in Lebanon, the government is dominated by Hezbollah and its allies, which are insisting that the country cease all cooperation with the STL, set up in the wake of ex-Premier Rafik Hariri’s 2005 murder. Last week, Prime Minister Najib Mikati said that he will resign if the cabinet fails to provide its funding share.
The UN-backed STL has charged four Hezbollah operatives in connection with the assassination.
