Future bloc leader MP Fouad Siniora commented on Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah’s statement responding to Siniora’s proposal that the Arab League and other countries cover the funding of UNESCO after the US cut its share, adding that associating this proposal with funding the Special Tribunal for Lebanon is “incorrect.”
Nasrallah on Friday compared Lebanon’s STL funding to the US funding of UNESCO, and inquired why Siniora and the March 14 parties do not call for a solution similar to the one that the Arab League has proposed for the UNESCO funding, i.e. that the League and other countries fund the STL on behalf of Lebanon.
Siniora also said that linking his suggestion to the UN-backed court is “incorrect” because Lebanon is “committed” to the tribunal.

“The issue of [paying] Lebanon’s share of STL funding is part of Lebanon’s collaboration with the STL,” Siniora added.
Four Hezbollah members have been indicted by the UN-backed court in the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
However, the Shia group strongly denied the charges and refuses to cooperate with the court. Lebanon contributes 49 percent of the STL’s annual funding.
In October, the US decided to cut UNESCO funding after it approved Palestinian membership.
The NNA also reported that Siniora held a closed-door meeting with PM Najib Mikati and Grand Mufti of the Lebanese Republic Sheikh Mohammad Rashid Qabbani.

Asked about the meeting, Siniora said it was “good.” However, he did not elaborate any further.
