Naharnet- Washington Advises Lebanon to Avoid Repercussions of Syrian Crisis, November 13, 2011

The United States has warned Lebanon against incurring negative consequences of the developments in Syria, especially regarding the Syrian refugees who have fled to Lebanon, reported the Kuwaiti al-Anbaa newspaper on Sunday.
Diplomatic sources explained that Lebanon should not hand over the refugees to Syria.
In addition, they said that in the worst case scenario of the eruption of a Sunni-Alawite war in Syria, Lebanon could avoid the development of a Sunni-Shiite war should it distance itself from the developments in its neighboring country.
They revealed that if the unrest in Syria were to last for a long period of time, its opposition would resort to arming itself, which would lead to a Sunni-Alawite war.
It is therefore in Lebanon’s best interest to avert any repercussions the crisis may have on the country.
These consequences also include U.S. economic sanctions on Syria, which Lebanon’s need to avoid, added the sources.
