BEIRUT: Hezbollah denied Thursday media reports that new party members have been arrested on charges of spying for Israel.
“These reports are totally baseless,” said a statement released by Hezbollah’s media office.
The statement also said the so-called “Abu Abed Slim” has never been a Hezbollah official.
Earlier Thursday, media reports claimed that five Hezbollah members had been arrested on charges of collaboration with Israel.
The reports said that a Hezbollah official, named Abu Abed Slim, fled to Israel with an amount of money.
In June, Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah declared that two party members had confessed to working for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency and a third had links to an as-yet-undetermined foreign intelligence service.
It was the first time Hezbollah had acknowledged that spies had penetrated its ranks.
Nasrallah described the U.S. Embassy in Awkar as “a nest of spies” recruiting spies to serve Israel. However, the U.S. Embassy swiftly dismissed Nasrallah’s claims as “empty accusations.”
