Now Lebanon - Aoun agreed to back STL in exchange for government seat, says cable, September 22, 2011

Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun told former US Ambassador to Lebanon Jeffrey Feltman in 2006 that he would not halt the creation of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) at the time, if he was brought into the then government headed by Fouad Siniora, a leaked US cable said.“[Aoun] on September 16 said he does not oppose the creation of a tribunal…Nor would he halt it if he was brought into the government,” the cable, which was published by WikiLeaks, said.It added that the FPM leader “claimed to be ‘the first person’ who called for an international tribunal.”Aoun also denied that his party “has taken money from Hezbollah or ‘any other state,’” Feltman reportedly said in his remarks. The former US envoy “reminded Aoun that the US takes seriously its legal obligation under [UN Security Council Resolution] 1701 to prevent the smuggling of weapons into Lebanon.”Aoun formed an alliance with the Shia group Hezbollah in 2006 and became March 14’s fierce political rival after boycotting the Siniora government that year.In August 2011, the STL indicted four Hezbollah members for ex-Premier Rafik Hariri’s 2005 murder. However, the Shia group ruled out the arrest of the four suspects.WikiLeaks has unleashed a torrent of more than a quarter million confidential US cables detailing a wide array of potentially explosive diplomatic episodes.
