July, 4 2010 - Now Lebanon - STL reportedly making progress in Hariri’s assassination

Quoting an unnamed source, Asharq al-Awsat newspaper reported on Sunday that progress is being made by the prosecutor for the Special Tribunal for Lebanon [STL] Daniel Bellemare and his team in attempt to uncover the perpetrators of the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

According to the reports, Lebanese officials were briefed on the progress made but the details were not disclosed to the public, the paper said. The source added that Bellemare’s office has doubled its work efforts and UN investigators have cast light on many points that were initially vague.

The information and clues that the tribunal had gathered about Hariri’s assassination have now become “firm and compelling evidence,” the paper quoted the source as saying.

Although UN investigators and experts have stepped up their work in Lebanon, there are still major tasks ahead that will require effort, the source added.
