The Lebanese Center for Human Rights (CLDH) is a local non-profit, non-partisan Lebanese human rights organization in Beirut that was established by the Franco-Lebanese Movement SOLIDA (Support for Lebanese Detained Arbitrarily) in 2006. SOLIDA has been active since 1996 in the struggle against arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance and the impunity of those perpetrating gross human violations.

July 29, 2010 - Now Lebanon - No link between STL and Arab leaders’ visit to Beirut, says As-Safir

As-Safir newspaper quoted on Thursday a source close to the prime minister’s office as saying that there is no connection between a momentous visit by Arab leaders in Beirut on Friday and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL).

The source said neither Sunnis nor Shia in Lebanon want to start a civil war.

Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdel Aziz, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani are expected in Beirut on Friday. The visits are widely seen as an attempt to ease tensions after Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said last week the STL will name Hezbollah members in its pending indictment, which sparked fears a new sectarian conflict will break out.

As-Safir’s source said the real purpose behind King Abdullah’s visit is to discuss two critical issues: the Palestinian-Israeli peace process and Iran’s conflict with the UN Security Council over its controversial nuclear weapons.
