FEMED – Press Release - Human rights activists are brought to Justice in Lebanon - March 29, 2011

Human rights activists are brought to Justice in Lebanon

The legal threat against Human Rights defenders in Lebanon are intolerable and reflect political will to destabilize actions and struggles of the Human rights associations.

The Euro_mediterranean Federation against enforced disappearances (FEMED) expresses its indignation toward the prosecution instituted against two Human Rights defenders in Lebanon, Marie Daunay, President of the Lebanese Center for Human Rights (CLDH) and Wadih Al-Asmar, General Secretary of the association.

Indeed, Marie Daunay and Wadih Al-Asmar are subjected to an outrageous complaint after the publication of a report from their organization entitled “Arbitrary Detention and Torture: the Bitter Reality of Lebanon”. This report is mainly about Lebanon security forces’ abuses during detention time on certain categories of persons: foreigners, individual suspected of terrorist acts or suspected having relation with Israël, Human rights activists… Their rights were violated and often their confessions extracted under torture. The two activists were summoned by the criminal investigation of Beirut twice during the week of March 21st and questioned during hours as commons criminals even though they have exercised their basic rights, freedom of expression and denunciation. The questions were about their sources that they did not reveal. The complaint would have been directly filed by Nabih Berri, president of the Parliament and of the political Shiite party, AMAL. However, the reason of this charge was still not notified despite their protest.

The Lebanese Center for Human Rights (CLDH) is one of the founding members of the FEMED who was created in Beirut in May 2007 particularly because of the high numbers of disappeared in this country. CLDH is a well known organization since years for its credibility, its work of quality about human rights situation in Lebanon, struggle against enforced disappearances, impunity, arbitrary detention and racism. The organization has published reports based on direct and reliable testimonies revealing of the non Human rights’ respect.

FEMED strongly condemns these practices of intimidation and determination against Human rights’ defenders. Few days after the International Day for the Right to the Truth, FEMED reminds that Human rights defenders’ struggle for Truth and Justice is often hampered by threats from authorities in their countries. In the Mediterranean region and whole around the world, Human rights defenders must be able to carry their fight and accomplish their goals without being in any way, harassed by the authorities.
