Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's political advisor Buthaina Shaaban said on Saturday that five “Lebanese people were arrested in Syria after taking part in riots in the country.”
“Five Lebanese, one Egyptian and an Algerian were among those who were arrested,” Shaaban told BBC Arabic.
She added that “there is a plan to incite strife in Syria and target the country’s security.”
“Syria was targeted [by the West] in 2005, and now it is being targeted for different reasons, but it is still being eyed.”
Shaaban denied that Syrian security forces shot anti-regime protesters in the recent days, adding that “armed groups” of people have attacked police stations and stolen their weapons.
“The security forces had to retaliate [to this attack].”
Syria this month began to witness unprecedented protests demanding major reforms in the country, which has been ruled by the Baath party for close to 50 years.
