The Daily Star - Guy uses Commonwealth Day to discuss women - March 15, 2011

BEIRUT: On the occasion of Commonwealth Day with inspiration from this year’s theme “Women as Agents of Change,” British Ambassador Frances Guy hosted a lunch at her residence entitled: “Invest in women, Transform the world,” according to a statement by the British Embassy in Beirut. More than 20 women representing Commonwealth ambassadors, political parties, the media, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, nongovernmental organizations, and other government departments attended. The ambassador briefly introduced the Commonwealth, which consists of 54 countries, representing two billion people. Guy reiterated that the Commonwealth was a series of potential friendships, loyalty and high standards for democratic values and cooperation across the board. To mark this year’s theme Guy hoped that women across the world will continue to be agents of change. Guy quoted extracts of Her Majesty the Queen’s Commonwealth Day message: “Women are ‘agents of change’ … the Commonwealth reflects on what more could be achieved if women were able to play an even larger role.” –The Daily Star
