July 15, 2010 - Naharnet - March 8 ministers might move to confrontation as STL indictment chatter picks up

A ministerial source who attended Wednesday’s cabinet session expressed fears that March 8 coalition ministers might move from conciliation to confrontation as reports are picking up that the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) may soon issue an indictment, Al-Liwaa newspaper reported on Thursday.

An anonymous diplomatic source from the UN told As-Safir newspaper in an interview published on Wednesday that STL Prosecutor Daniel Bellemare expects to issue the indictment before the end of this year.

The daily also reported that Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi told the Knesset last week that the STL’s indictment would be handed down in September and could lead to the deterioration of the situation in Lebanon.

Al-Liwaa’s unnamed source also said “stormy differences” among regional and international powers over Lebanon is another reason the March 8 ministers might soon turn confrontational.
