July 17, 2010 - Now Lebanon - Sami Gemayel: Nasrallah’s speech raises fears of new May 7 events

In an interview with the Free Lebanon radio station on Saturday, Kataeb bloc MP Sami Gemayel said that Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah’s speech on Friday raised fears of witnessing new May 7 events.

Back then, Hezbollah supporters took over West Beirut for a week to protest a government decision to dismantle the party’s private landline network.

However, Gemayel said he is not afraid of new May 7 events, “but if you ask me if it will happen again, I say a [new] May 7 could happen as long as Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah makes such speeches,” Gemayel said.
Nasrallah said on Friday that an indictment by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) into the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri is an “Israeli project” designed to target Hezbollah by stirring up sectarian strife in Lebanon. He also said that Hezbollah cannot penetrated by Israeli agents.
Gemayel reiterated his support for the STL, saying it remains “a red line” that should not be overstepped.
“Lebanon has two choices, either criminals remain free, or they are brought to justice so that the country can have peace,” he said.
