The Daily Star - Men arrested for stealing copper cable in Chouf - March 3, 2011

BEIRUT: Four men suspected of stealing copper electrical cable were arrested Wednesday after police stopped them and discovered that their vehicles were unregistered. Security sources told The Daily Star that police in Saadiyat, Chouf, made the discovery when they pulled over a Datsun Bluebird and a Toyota pick-up. The vehicles, which were found to lack registration documents, were found to contain hundreds of meters of copper cable, as well as scrap metal. The cars were impounded and the men referred to the judiciary for questioning. Gangs of thieves in several parts of the country have disconnected copper electricity cables from electricity poles in recent months, trying to cash in on the item on black market.  –The Daily Star
