The Daily Star - Tripoli launches campaign to fight child labor - March 2, 2011

TRIPOLI: The Municipality of Tripoli launched Tuesday a large-scale campaign to fight child labor in the northern coastal city and surrounding areas. The city’s Mayor Nader Ghazal said the goal of the project was to “alleviate the suffering inflicted on society by child labor and rampant unemployment, which has become a burden on our youth.” “All we can do is set up a general framework that will help monitor child labor and poverty, and will offer re-integration and rehabilitation services,” he added. Ghazal stressed the importance of collaborating with the initiative, adding that the municipality is remiss “despite our greatest efforts.”“We have inherited a great legacy of neglect and we are doing our best to eradicate it.” Ghazal added that the purpose of the project was to affirm that the efforts of all components of Tripoli will be necessary in order to ensure the success of the campaign.– Antoine Amrieh
