Now Lebanon - Aawar: STL indictment amendment targets Hezbollah and Syria - May 09, 2011

The amendment of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon’s (STL) indictment “at this time is part of the systematic campaign against the Resistance forces and Syria,” Change and Reform bloc MP Fadi Aawar said on Monday morning.
Aawar also told Al-Manar television that Finance Minister Rayya al-Hassan is inaccurately describing Lebanon’s financial situation and that it is not as bad as she claims.
“We must find out what [former] Prime Minister Fouad Siniora taught her,” he said, referencing his bloc’s repeated criticisms of the financial policy of the governments of Siniora and former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
Aawar also addressed popular anti-regime protests in Syria, saying that “the only thing that Syria should do is eliminate these destructive groups, outlaws, and armed gangs. The political project that is targeting Syria aims to establish general chaos in the country.”
On Friday STL Prosecutor-General Daniel Bellemare filed an amended indictment that will replace the previous indictment that was filed in March.
Hezbollah has repeatedly criticized the STL as an American-Israeli tool, amid reports that the tribunal will indict party members in its investigation of Rafik Hariri’s 2005 assassination.
Widespread anti-regime protests have rocked Syria since mid-March. The government has responded with a bloody crackdown that rights activists say has killed hundreds of civilians.
