The EU and UN on Monday called for the immediate release of the seven Estonians kidnapped March in the Bekaa Valley.
“We appeal for the immediate release of the seven abducted Estonian nationals. These bicyclists came to Lebanon as tourists, with no ill intent. No purpose whatsoever is served by their continued detention,” head of the EU Delegation in Lebanon Angelina Eickhorst and UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Michael Williams said in a statement issued Monday.
They added that the UN and EU are closely following the investigation into the incident, adding that the kidnapping “could threaten Lebanon’s standing in the international community.”
Seven Estonian bicyclists were kidnapped on March 23 shortly after entering Lebanon on a bicycle tour from neighboring Syria.
The case remains shrouded in mystery with little information gleaned on their whereabouts or those behind the abduction.
Authorities initially appeared confident that the case would quickly be resolved after recovering a mini-van and car used in the kidnapping and arresting several people.
But the trail appears to have gone cold with two key suspects – a Lebanese and a Syrian – still on the run and no clear evidence as to who ordered the kidnapping.
