Now Lebanon - Hajjar: Finalizing false witnesses’ issue before STL indictment is impossible - October 12, 2010

Lebanon First bloc MP Mohammad Hajjar told As-Sharq radio station on Tuesday that the issue of false witnesses cannot be finalized before the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) issues its indictment because the investigation is confidential therefore attaining documents from the tribunal is not possible.
On August 18 the cabinet tasked Justice Minister Ibrahim Najjar with providing a report on the issue of false testimonies in the investigation of the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Ministers have reportedly received copies of the report, which Najjar is expected to present in Tuesday’s cabinet session.
Criticisms against Najjar’s report aim to cancel the STL, Hajjar said, adding that the justice minister’s report is purely legal.
Development and Liberation bloc MP Qassem Hashem said Monday that the report is vague and it might be misinterpreted.
Hajjar also said that according to the law, issues transferred to the Justice Council are related to national security, and added that this does not apply to the false witnesses’ issue.
As-Safir newspaper reported on Monday that March 8 ministers’ final position on the issue of false witnesses will be to call for transferring the file to the Justice Council.
