If Hezbollah is unable to make progress on the “false witnesses” affair, it is likely to take new approaches such as bringing up the constitutionality of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) in parliament, Al-Mustaqbal newspaper quoted an anonymous source as saying in its Thursday edition.
March 8 politicians have called for the cabinet to task the Justice Council with investigating the issue of witnesses who gave unreliable testimonies to the international investigation into former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri’s 2005 assassination.
Some March 14 figures have said that the regular judiciary should handle the issue, while others have argued that unreliable testimonies cannot be investigated until the STL issues its indictment.
The party may also use rising commodity prices or electricity rationing as pretexts for street demonstrations, the source added.
Hezbollah may have quieted its rhetoric temporarily in response to regional developments, but this is merely a change in tactics and the group still aims to overthrow the STL, the source said.
