Now Lebanon - Baroud asks Saqr to investigate Roumieh Prison incidents - April 11, 2011

Interior Minister Ziad Baroud told MTV on Monday evening that he requested Government Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr to launch an investigation into the Roumieh Prison incidents.
“What happened in Roumieh was a time bomb,” said Baroud, adding, “We had previously issued a warning that [riots] may ignite.”
The interior minister said that the riots that took place at the facility in Roumieh could have happened anywhere in the world. “[However], is it acceptable for a prison meant to hold 1600 inmates to hold up to 4000 sometimes?” asked Baroud.
He added that last week’s riots would not have taken place if the emergency plan he submitted to the cabinet in 2009 had been implemented.
“I am not judging [anyone], and I am not evading my responsibilities. What we have to do has become clear [now].”
“A prison must be a center for reform and not a center that increases the [number] of prisoners.”
Inmates in Roumieh Prison and their families have protested in recent weeks, demanding an improvement in prison conditions and the expediting of their trials.
