The EU Observer news website reported Thursday that Estonia is opposing EU sanctions against Syria because of the ongoing case of the Estonians kidnapped in Lebanon.
The site cited Estonian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Minna-Liina Lind as saying that Talinn “needs more time for consideration [of sanctions].”
Anonymous EU diplomats told EU Observer that the kidnapping case is a major factor in Estonia’s policy.
However, Lind said that Estonia’s stance on the sanctions and the kidnapping of its nationals are not linked.
The European Union agreed in principle last Friday to impose an arms embargo against Syria and prepare additional measures to punish the regime for a bloody crackdown against protests.
Lebanese authorities have been searching for the seven Estonians since they were abducted at gunpoint near the eastern Bekaa town of Zahle on March 23 after entering Lebanon through Syria on their bicycles.
Some figures have alleged that the kidnapped Estonians are now on Syrian territory.
