BEIRUT: Justice Minister Shakib Qortbawi visited detainees at
the Baabda Judicial Palace detention center Friday, said a statement from the
ministry.
Qortbawi was accompanied by the ministry’s director general,
Omar Natour, and several other judges from the Justice Palace. During the
visit, which lasted more than three hours, Qortbawi listened to detainees as
they described their situation.
“Qortbawi vowed to detainees, who do not have lawyers, to stand
up for them,” said a statement issued after the visit.
According to the statement, Qortbawi also told the detainees
that he would ask Lebanon’s Bar Association to allocate more lawyers to defend
detainees who are unable to arrange a defense for themselves.
Qortbawi’s
visit to Baabda’s Justice Palace is one of a series of visits to Justice
Palaces throughout the country. “I will work to find permanent solutions for
Baabda’s Justice Palace,” said Qortbawi.
