The Daily Star - Northeast Lebanon residents call for increasing aid to Syrian refugees, June 17 2012

BEIRUT: Residents of Arsal called on international organizations over the weekend to increase the level of aid to Syrian refugees who are taking shelter in the northeast Lebanon village.
“We call on the international organizations, especially the European ones, to support the Syrian refugees even though families of Arsal are undertaking these responsibilities in compliance with our conscience and historic ties with the Syrian people,” the residents said in a statement Saturday.
They also said the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was adopting a mechanism which was inconsistent with the facts on the ground.
“They [UNHCR] are providing aid to 150 families, while there are 600 families who are in need of this aid,” the residents said.
They said the aid provided was insufficient given that there were on average five members per Syrian family resident in the area.
Residents of Arsal are supportive of the ongoing uprising against Syria’s President Bashar Assad which broke out in March 2011, and have hosted dozens of refugees from the conflict.
