The Daily Star - $2 mln EU program to kick off end of year, June 28 2012

BEIRUT: An EU-funded program to enhance parliamentary oversight wrapped up Wednesday, with officials praising its “valuable contribution” and pledging that a new $2 million program will start at the end of the year. The program, whose official name is “Strengthening Technical Capacities of the Lebanese Parliament to perform Effective Legislative and Budgetary Oversight Functions,” was conducted by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy and funded by the EU over the past 21 months. It saw the establishment of an Advisory Unit to assist Parliament’s Finance and Budget Committee and Administration and Justice Committee. The program “succeeded in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of Parliament, by providing strategic direction, input and advice to various parliamentary committees,” said Elsa Fenet, the Chargee d’Affaires of the EU delegation to Lebanon.
