The Daily Star - New social affairs center for juveniles opens in Roumieh, June 14 2012

BEIRUT: Officials opened the first ever social affairs center at Roumieh’s juvenile prison Wednesday, aiming to provide awareness and individual therapies to underage prisoners.
Interior Minister Marwan Charbel and Social Affairs Minister Wael Abu Faour inaugurated the center vowing to establish similar centers in all prisons in the country.
Speaking at a news conference in Roumieh, Charbel said that the time has come to make inmates feel that they are “here to improve and not simply be punished.”
Abu Faour said that the center would provide eight professional social workers to counsel inmates on the problems they experience in their daily lives behind bars.
He also said the social workers will offer therapy to inmates to help them understand the dangers of drug dealing and drug abuse.
“The cooperation of Interior Minister Charbel is an example of how two different government institutions can work together,” Abu Faour said.
“No one wants to take the prerogatives of another ministry or violate them, but it is important to have cooperation between them,” Abu Faour added.
