Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hussam Zaki reiterated his country’s support of the Lebanese cabinet, Prime Minister Saad Hariri and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), Al-Hayat newspaper reported on Tuesday.
“Tension in Lebanon comes due to some domestic and regional parties’ aims to obstruct the STL and make the majority of Lebanese people abide [by such goals],” he added.
Zaki also said that Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Abu al-Gheit during his Monday meeting with Hariri voiced Cairo’s support of Lebanese institutions and the country’s stability.
Hariri travelled to Cairo on Monday, during which he met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and other officials.
Tension has run high in Lebanon after reports said that the STL would soon issue its indictment in the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Some March 8 figures are calling for the abolition of the tribunal.
