The Daily Star - Jumblatt: Prisons should top next Cabinet's agenda - April 5, 2011

BEIRUT: Progressive Socialist Party chief Walid Jumblatt urged Monday the next Cabinet to put the issue of prisons on top of its priorities to improve detainees’ living conditions. “We have to look into incidents taking place at Roumieh prison and draw conclusions, particularly the need to build new prisons and rehabilitate old ones, which was not on the priority list of any of the previous cabinets,” he said. Riots broke out at Roumieh prison, Lebanon’s largest prison, Monday. Separately, Jumblatt called on state officials to protect the lives and interests of Lebanese expatriates in Ivory Coast. – The Daily Star
