Now Lebanon - Najjar calls for taking measures to improve prisons - April 4, 2011

Justice Minister Ibrahim Najjar voiced the importance of approving certain measures to maintain the course of justice and prisoners’ dignity, according to a statement issued by the Justice Ministry on Monday.
The statement voiced the importance of speeding up the judicial process for inmates serving pre-trial detentions.
Najjar called on the relevant authorities to provide the money needed to build prisons in all Lebanese provinces.
He added that foreign embassies must provide tickets to facilitate the deportation of foreign nationals back to their countries after serving their sentence.
Najjar’s statements come after a riot broke out in Roumieh Prison on Saturday when prisoners began protesting cell searches. The disobedience ended on Sunday after successful negotiations with the prisoners. However, tensions renewed on Monday.
