Daily Star - Bellemare suffering from advanced form of diabetes: report, November 3rd 2011

BEIRUT: The prosecutor of a U.N.-backed court probing the 2005 assassination of statesman Rafik Hariri is suffering from an advanced type of diabetes, a report published Thursday said.
The New York-based report by pan-Arab newspaper Al-Hayat said that Daniel Bellemare, Special Tribunal for Lebanon prosecutor, has been “out of sight” after falling ill with a form of advanced diabetes.
It quoted well-informed sources as saying that Bellemare’s “severe health condition has led him to isolate himself from people and stay in a closed room in Canada.”
STL spokesman Martin Youssef would not reveal any information regarding Bellemare’s health. He said that in line with the tribunal policy, health-related issues regarding STL personnel were not discussed.
“With respect to the work of the STL, I can assure you that the work is ongoing without any administrative delay on our part,” Youssef told Al-Hayat.
The well-informed sources stressed that despite Bellemare’s “health crisis,” progress was being made, adding that the STL prosecutor’s “dossiers” had been preserved.
“Even in Bellemare’s absence, STL work will never be disrupted,” one source said.
