BEIRUT: The arrest of an employee of Sidon’s Water Department for allegedly stealing LL53 million in water fees and the theft of jewelery and chocolate valued at around $1 million Monday night topped crime news Tuesday.
A source told The Daily Star that police arrested an employee at Sidon’s Water Department Tuesday on charges of stealing LL53 million from the department collector, who is responsible for collecting water fees on behalf of the Energy Ministry.
The collector forgot his leather bag in the car and the suspect, who works in the same division, allegedly broke into the car and stole the bag which contained around LL53 million.
Police were informed of the robbery and begun looking for the suspect at the request of ISF commander in the south, Brigadier Monzer al-Ayoubi.
After conducting investigations, during which they checked for fingerprints and listened to the testimonies of employees, the police arrested the man and returned the stolen money to officials in the water department. The Water Department employee was sent to judicial authorities for further questioning.
Separately, a security source told The Daily Star Tuesday that a burglary took place at an engineering company in Hazmieh where thieves made off with equipment and jewelery valued at nearly $1 million.
Shortly afterward, thieves broke into Paladin Patisserie, also in Hazmieh, and made off with computers and $16,000 worth of chocolate, the source said.
Investigations into the burglaries are under way, and it is not yet known whether the two incidents are related.
Meanwhile, police arrested a man on charges of participating in a car theft ring, possessing unlicensed weapons and counterfeiting, according to a statement issued by the Directorate General of Internal Security Forces Tuesday.
According to the ISF, police received information that a gang has been stealing cars and transporting them to the Bekaa region, where they are sold or returned to their owners in exchange for money.
Police stopped a Kia van with a fake license plate and discovered one of the gang members who was wanted on charges of theft and counterfeiting.
The suspect confessed to transporting a number of 4x4s to the Bekaa and handing them over to two men, one of whom is now in detention. – The Daily Star, with additional reporting by Mohammed Zaatari
