March 8 plans to overthrow Mikati before renewal of tribunal protocol
Hezbollah could not tolerate the shock from the funding of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) and found itself facing a head of a Cabinet who is not willing to ruin the reputation of the government, let alone the STL.
Prominent political sources told Al-Joumhouria that Hezbollah is preparing to overthrow Prime Minister Najib Mikati before the renewal of the protocol agreement with the STL in March.
The sources said Hezbollah’s plan includes strengthening MP Michel Aoun so that together the Free Patriotic Movement leader and Hezbollah would have the upper hand in the government.
After doing so by giving Aoun the lion’s share of public jobs (90 percent for him and 10 percent for President Michel Sleiman), Hezbollah would deal a harsh blow to Mikati by pushing Aoun into resigning from the government on the eve of the renewal of the STL protocol.
