BEIRUT:
State Prosecutor Saeed Mirza submitted Monday his judicial review of events in
Nahr al-Bared to Investigative Judge Ghassan Ouweidat, setting the stage for an
indictment in the case of Islamists detained without charge.
Mirza’s
step is seen as part of the government’s effort to speed up the trials of
Islamists inmates detained following the 2007 deadly clashes between the
Lebanese Army and gunmen in the Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr al-Bared in
north Lebanon.
The
suspects were arrested on charges of fighting or aiding fighters during the
2007 armed clashes between the Army and the militant group Fatah al-Islam.
The
judicial review by Mirza should include an indictment based on investigations.
Ouweidat has the prerogative to officially release Mirza’s indictment, amend it
or reject it outright.
Relatives
of the around 180 inmates have been protesting across the country, particularly
in the northern city of Tripoli, asking the government to speed up legal
procedures.
Several
government officials have vowed to pay special attention to the case with
Justice Minister Shakib Qortbawi saying Monday that decision by Judge Ouweidat
should be finalized very soon.
Last month, Grand Mufti
Sheikh Mohammad Rashid Qabbani served judicial authorities with a two-month
deadline to act on the case of detained Islamists, threatening to stage a large
sit-in in central Beirut to highlight their concern over prisoners held without
formal charges.
