Now Lebanon - Interior Ministry says it is “responsibly handling” Roumieh violence - April 2, 2011

The Interior Ministry issued a statement on Saturday saying that it is assuming its responsibilities in dealing with the violence that erupted at the Roumieh prison earlier in the day.
“The ministry is boldly assuming its responsibilities and calls on all [authorities] to follow its lead,” the statement said, after a riot broke out in the prison when inmates were calling for a pardon law and for measures to decrease their sentences.
The statement added that the Interior Ministry is following up on the issue and is “extremely keen on preserving the safety of the inmates.”
It also said that an immediate investigation was launched in order to uncover the reasons behind the violent outbreak.
NOW Lebanon’s correspondent reported earlier that a riot broke out in Roumieh Prison when prisoners began protesting cell searches.
