The Daily Star - Lebanon authorities arrest 4 people in major cocaine bust - August 03, 2011

BEIRUT: Lebanese authorities carried out their largest cocaine bust in over a year Tuesday, seizing 53 kilograms of cocaine in Kaslik, north of Beirut, from an organized criminal network.
Police officers from the Drug Control Bureau chased two cars Sunday – a Range Rover and a Mercedes-Benz – in the Kaslik suburbs after units alerted them that drugs, worth $2.3 million, were hidden inside the vehicles.
After two weeks of monitoring and chasing members of the criminal network in various areas including Sidon, Jounieh and Beirut, the bureau identified and arrested a Palestinian with a Bulgarian passport for possession of 53 kilograms of cocaine.
Questioning resulted in the arrest of three other people: a Palestinian, a Dutchman and an Irishman. Police discovered that the suspects, who arrived from Europe, had planned to sell the drugs – which were imported from South America – for $45 per gram.
Probes are still under way in cooperation with Interpol and international anti-drug groups.
