Syrian National Council member Mohammad Sarmeni said Wednesday evening that Syrians “never expected [to see themselves becoming refugees] except” during the current crackdown on anti-regime protests in their country.
He told Future News that there are over 8000 Syrian refugees in Lebanon, 7000 in Turkey and 5000 in Jordan.
The SNC figure added that the refugees face difficult humanitarian circumstances, especially in Lebanese border village of Wadi Khaled “which receives wounded [Syrians] every day.”
More than 5000 people, most of them civilians, have been killed in a Syrian crackdown on almost daily pro-democracy demonstrations in the country since mid-March, according to the United Nations.
Thousands of Syrians have fled into Lebanon in recent months, often using illegal border crossings, to escape the unrest gripping their country.
