The Daily Star - EDL contract workers warn rivals against usurping their jobs, July 5 2012

BEIRUT: Electricite Du Liban contract workers sent written notifications Thursday to private sector electricity service providers warning them against performing tasks that EDL contract workers normally perform, security sources told The Daily Star.
Notifications were issued to the following companies: Khatib and Alamy, Debbas, and Butec, the sources added.

Earlier Thursday morning, protesting contract workers forcefully shut the company’s gates, preventing EDL employees from entering the company’s premises.

However, the workers reopened the gates at 9:30 a.m.

Speaker Nabih Berri has asked the Parliament Secretariat to convene and formally endorse the 23 laws passed during a general session of Parliament Monday.

However, a law that made EDL contract workers full-timers could derail the meeting.

Christians MPs from both the March 8 and March 14 camps have strongly opposed the law, claiming that it will lead to the underrepresentation of Christians in the civil service sector.

The issue has heightened tensions between Berri and MP Michel Aoun, who are political allies.

MPs who oppose the law may challenge it before the Constitutional Council or propose another one and forward it to Parliament.

A third option would be for President Michel Sleiman to return the draft law to Parliament.
