April 8, 2010 - Now Lebanon - Mirza pushes for death penalty for 10 suspects in Al-Bahsas explosion

The National News Agency (NNA) reported on Thursday that State Prosecutor Judge Said Mirza pushed for the death penalty for 10 suspects for their involvement in the September 2008 explosion in al-Bahsas in North Lebanon that targeted a Lebanese army bus, killing at least five and injuring 21.

The NNA identified the accused as Abdel Ghani Jawhar, Rafeh al-Eid, Khaled al-Jaber, Mohammad Azzam, Obeid al-Qafil, Osama as-Shahabi, Ghazi Abdullah, Alaa Mohrez, Hamza Qassem, Nabil Abdul Rahman and Abdul Rahman Awad – who is also known as the Prince of Fatah al-Islam.

Mirza suspended the trail of 43 suspects on the basis of insufficient evidence, said the agency, adding that others were let go. However, the reason behind their release was undisclosed.

The agency added that Mirza referred the case to Investigating Judge Nabil Sari, who is to issue an indictment in the case.
