By The Daily Star

BEIRUT: Interior Minister Ziyad Baroud visited the Zahle prison on Tuesday after the jail’s 12-year reconstruction project was completed. Baroud was accompanied by Gendarmerie Commander Antoine Shakkour and by an array of military figures. Several MPs welcomed him in addition to local officials and to judiciary figures. Work to rehabilitate the prison started in 1998 and about $500,000 was put into facilities, including workshops for inmates, a kitchen and outdoor and indoor parks. The reconstruction was recently completed and the prison can now hold 450 prisoners. – The Daily Star
